During the era of colonization, why were Africa, S. America and Asia victims rather than conquerers?

European nations were far more technically advanced than the tribal cultures in Africa, Asia, Australia, India, South AND North America. The Spaniards and Portuguese also departed/arrived with the blessings of the Church.
