What do americans mean when they use the term 'liberals'?

I'm asking this question because I see the term mentioned in connection with anything vaguely left wing (and appears to be derogatory) but I'm not sure how Amerians define it or if there's a collective definition The word derives from the Latin 'liber' meaning 'free'. But i though freedom was what the American Dream was about.
