There is a conflict between Ralph and Jack in that there is competition between the two to become the leader. Their conflict conveys the tendency for human beings to be ruled by fear rather than merit. William Golding expounds the flaws of civilization by exploiting the conflict between Ralph and Jack, in The Lord of the Flies. He juxtaposes the flawed characters in the novel with modern day mankind, thereby demonstrating their innate similarities.
